Commissioning a Sculpture

Commissions, traditionally, are a relationship between the artist & the client/commissioner, in which an idea is developed according to the needs of both parties. This incorporates theme, site requirements & available budget.

This process is far more likely to satisfy the client than the currently popular method of tendering or holding a competition, which more closely resembles a "lucky dip" in which a decision is reached by a committee to acquire a work of sculpture which may, or may not, fulfill the client's requirements.

It is suggested that, as an alternative to this, the client chooses an artist to undertake their proposed commission, informed by knowledge of their previous work. The artist then works closely with the client to develop their idea, or vision through discussion, drawings, & maquettes (small scale working models). In this way, it is inevitable that the sculptor will find a satisfactory sculptural realization of the clients idea - often the process of negotiation results in a work which surpasses the initial expectations of both parties.

The commissioning process is a special one, producing a unique & valuable product, which may serve needs of a civic or personal nature.

Common forms of sculptural commissions are;

  • Memorials
  • Monuments
  • Portrait Busts
  • Fountains
  • Architectural adornments
  • Garden Sculpture
  • Indoor Sculpture
  • Plaques
  • Medallions
  • Trophies
  • Enlargement or reproduction of an existing work

Damien's first large commission, "Harmony", 2004. This piece was modelled in clay (pictured) then cast on site in reconstituted stone. It was made as a memorial for the "Dombroski Foundation" near Mittagong, NSW.
